Mk6 Escort Dash Removal - WALKTHROUGH

Postby Marc » Sat Sep 25, 2010 6:26 pm

Hi folks, here is a guide on how to remove a mk6 dash board. Try to allow yourself a good couple of hours from removal to re-fitting.

this is what tools you will need:

1/4" ratchet with a couple of long extension bars
3/4" ratchet with large extension bar
Wire Snips
T50 Torx bit
Pozi + Flat screwdriver
5.5mm Socket
Deep 10mm socket

First off Disconnet the battery

Here is the dash before i started

Tool kit i used

Remove all switches from the dash surround

Image

Remove top and bottom steering cowling, for this i used a 1/4" ratchet and a T15 torx bit
Image
Image

Remove airbag from steering wheel, There are two bolts located on the back of the steering wheel, undo the two of them with a 5.5mm socket and small extension with 1/4" ratchet, once undone pull the airbag off the steering wheel, you will then see this
Image

Undo 3 screws located on the inside of the steering wheel, this will release the clock spring which is located behind the steering wheel
Image

Undo the big bolt in the centre, i used a 15mm socket with a large extension bar
Image

Extract the steering wheel by pulling it towards you **be careful not to break the clock spring located behind** steering wheel off
Image

Remove wiper stalks, there is a pozi screw behind that needs to be removed, also two cable each side of the stalks one blue and one white, remove these also

Stalks removed

Remove 4 screws holding the speedo in, pull this out slightly, then pull out the blue and white connectors behind. Also there is a speedo cable to be removed this simply pulls out

Speedo removed

Remove heater controls, there are 4 pozi screws
Image

Remove stereo
Image

Remove "A" Pillar covers, one screw at the top, simply pull off once undone
Image
Image

Remove Gear and handbrake gaitors, and switch
Image

Remove 4 bolts, i used a 10mm deep socket with two long extension bars on a 1/4" ratchet
Image

This is what you will see once removed
Image

Remove one screw towards the back,Once you have done the above remove the centre console by pulling up at the back and sliding out

Almost there, now not much more to do :)

Remove 4 bolts (2 Either side of the dash) they are located on the sides, they are T50 torx bit
Image

Remove 3 caps along the top of the dash and undo the bolts with a T50 torx bit and a couple of long extension bars on a 1/4" ratchet
Image

Also there is a bolt located just above the stereo that needs to be removed, there maybe a circle cap covering this, unfortunatly i didnt get a picture of this

YOUR DASH IS NOW READY TO BE REMOVED

The dash will now be able to be shifted forwards from its original place, you may need an extra pair of hands at this point to help lift it out. here is the dash shifted forwards
Image

this is when you will need to also have a pair of wire snips to cut off the zip ties that are holding the wires to the dash, be carefull when you pull it forward as there will be wires attached to the back of the dash. Once you are sure you have everything off the dash and its all clear. Remove the dash *extra care needed when lifting over the steering column*

Dash removed

Refitting is revarsal of the removal stages
