Newman Cam

Postby Lutenertic » Wed Aug 26, 2009 8:24 pm

After a lot of deliberating and trawling the web, I have decided to go for a Newman FORC/276/409T camshaft. The general consensus on the web is that the Kent and Piper cams arn't as strong, sometimes resulting in excess wear in only 2000 miles. This is due to the fact that the Kent or Piper arn't chilled iron castings unlike the Newman Cams.

Chill cast:
A chill is an object used to promote solidification in a specific portion of a metal casting mold. Normally the metal in the mold cools at a certain rate relative to thickness of the casting. When the geometry of the molding cavity prevents directional solidification from occurring naturally, a chill can be strategically placed to help promote it.

The only possible downside of this, is the fact that the lifters are solid. The reason for this is that hydralic lifters aren't the same quality as the Cam, so they get chewed up in no time. I haven't had any experience with solid lifters in CVH engines before, but I am reassured that it is an easy setup. I made the order today and it should arrive on Friday.

The Camshaft arrived yesterday :D , so just when they said it would...Nice

It was very well packaged and looked very professional

Once I took the items out of the box I was again very impressed with the presentation of the packaging and contents:

When I unwrapped the camshaft and lifters, I was amazed in the quality of engineering that went into these parts, its not often that you see good old english engineering anymore, and it looks as though the guys at Newman take great pride in what they do.

So the kit consists of the following:
Camshaft
Solid lifters
Lifter clamp
Timing Disc

So a big thumbs up to the guys at Newman    Next will be fitting

I have got the camshaft in and working today, it was a fairly lengthy process due to me have no experience with solid lifters in CVH engines. I have driven the car for about 15 miles today and have another 35 to go before it can be driven [s]like it's stolen[/s] a bit faster. I have a video of it running an will post it up shortly.

I am impressed with how well it idles and can feel a nice smooth power delivery, but won't find out what it's really like until I've completed the 50miles. It's not that tappy either, less than I expected anyway. not long now! :D
